Fostering Biodiversity Leadership for the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16)
In the preparation for COP16, our objective was to assist Latin American organizations in regaining a leading role in the protection of biodiversity. We developed a strategy to generate tangible impacts at the most significant global event concerning biodiversity. Through our COP16 INSIDER project, a complimentary information and analysis service, we disseminated a weekly summary of specialized news and produced a series of high-level journalistic articles in various formats, which garnered thousands of consultations, readings, and interactions. We also worked to strengthen the capacities of indigenous leaders, government representatives, and technicians to influence the COP16 negotiations and promote policies in favor of biodiversity and the people who protect it.
PIACI at COP16
At COP16, we worked in collaboration with GTI PIACI and its allies to strengthen their advocacy in defense of indigenous peoples in isolation. From Cali, Colombia, we implemented a comprehensive strategy that included:
This included multimedia content production and real-time coverage.
We promoted the "Charter of the Right to Exist" adopted as an international declaration by Colombia.
Utilizing a strategic and collaborative approach, we successfully amplified their message in key areas of the global biodiversity agenda.
Global Mobilization: fires and droughts in South America
In the face of the climate crisis in South America, we collaborated with Quipa Collective and a coalition of territorial organizations and NGOs to organize a press conference during Climate Week in New York. We provided support to indigenous leaders from Ecuador, Brazil, and Peru, amplifying their message and demanding policies that recognize their territorial rights as essential to climate preservation.
Our comprehensive communications strategy yielded the following results:
Our strategy's global reach included: The message resonated in 23 countries, in 4 languages, with more than 120 specialized publications and a potential 125 million readership.
Scientific evidence: We provided the media with a factsheet that included NASA data, maps, and unpublished reports that supported the urgency of the call.
Empowering people for wetland conservation
More than a billion people depend on wetlands. However, 64% of these ecosystems have disappeared in the last century. In response to this critical crisis, we have partnered with the International Convention on Wetlands (RAMSAR) to empower individuals in protecting these vital ecosystems.
We have designed multilingual advocacy and outreach kits for the CEPA (Communication, Education, Awareness and Participation) Program, making it easier for thousands of people around the world to join the cause. These kits included:
Posters, infographics, and adaptable content in three languages (Spanish, English and French).
The kits also included rigorous and accessible science communication materials.
These resources are designed to be adaptable to the needs of the 192 member countries of the Convention.
Our work amplified the impact of the CEPA Program, raising awareness and mobilizing thousands of people in defense of these valuable ecosystems.
The Right to Exist: Indigenous Peoples in Isolation
In collaboration with the International Work Group for the Protection of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact (GTI-PIACI) and its 21 member organizations, we developed a digital communication and advocacy strategy. This initiative included the renewal of its image to:
This strategy aims to amplify the voices of individuals in isolated communities, ensuring their situation is recognized on the political agenda and their rights and territories are protected.
We aim to raise awareness in society about the importance of respecting their right to remain in isolation.
We are also mobilizing support for their rights in international forums, such as COP16.
Turn off the oil lamp and turn on life
In cooperation with Amnesty International Americas, we developed the identity for the Warriors for the Amazon campaign, which supports the efforts of nine young activists who aim to safeguard their communities from the harmful effects of oil flares. We developed a living brand that reflects their values, empowering them to create their own content and demonstrating that it is possible to "Turn off the oil lamp and turn on life”.
Yasuní: a historic opportunity to halt the climate crisis
We collaborated with Quipa Collective to support the Waorani Nation of Ecuador (NAWE) in their efforts to preserve Yasuní, a vital global biodiversity hotspot. We created a strategy to position the NAWE as a leader in Yasuní conservation actions, ensuring that their right to participation and self-determination is respected. We accompanied their advocacy actions in Quito and traveled to Puyo, in the center of the Ecuadorian Amazon, to document the International Summit for Yasuní. This resulted in an action plan with alternatives to dismantle the oil infrastructure and build a post-extractivist future.
One voice for Mother Earth
At a key moment for the Convention on Biological Diversity, we transformed the website of the International Indigenous Forum on Biodiversity (IIFB), making it an essential tool for:
Expand global advocacy.
Defend indigenous land rights.
It also mobilizes indigenous communities around the globe.
The website's revamped design is more accessible, informative, and dynamic, amplifying the voices of Indigenous Peoples in their efforts to safeguard Mother Earth.
Creating biocultural spaces where nature and culture intertwine
The Pumamaqui Foundation is dedicated to creating a global environment where people and nature coexist in harmony. We promote inclusive environmental governance and equitable access to natural resources.
In collaboration, we developed a communication strategy that included:
The creation of a custom graphic line that reflects their commitment to sustainability.
The foundation's website has been designed to meet their specific needs, incorporating modern and functional elements.
Inspiring digital elements that connect with audiences and mobilize support.
This project has strengthened Pumamaqui's digital presence, amplifying initiatives such as the Iloculin Llanganates Biocultural Reserve and motivating actions in favor of sustainability and environmental justice.
Upholding grassroot movements for systemic transformations
The Colectivo Quipa weaves collaboration networks across the Americas to defend the biocultural wealth of territories. Their work connects grassroots organizations and social movements, driving collective action for a more just and sustainable future. At Colmena Lab, we believe in the power of collaboration. That's why we joined forces with the Colectivo Quipa to bring their vision to life through the creation of a website that inspires and connects.
Together with the Colectivo Quipa team, we built a digital space that reflects their essence, history, values, and commitment to defending territories, facilitating connections between grassroots organizations and social movements across the continent to amplify the voices of communities and highlight their struggle for social and environmental justice.
We made every effort to reflect the dreams and goals of the Colectivo Quipa in every detail of the website, creating a digital experience that promotes collective action and social transformation.
