The Association of Forest Communities of Petén (ACOFOP) is an association of community organizations that protect the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Maya Biosphere Reserve through a community forestry model.
Colmena Lab developed a campaign that positioned this community forestry model as a successful and effective alternative for conserving the forests and building livelihoods that sustain the communities in Latin America and Guatemala. This was achieved through the promotion of the Selva Maya - Amazon Community Forestry Exchange: “Forests for Life and Peace.” Representatives from community organizations, government institutions, international experts, journalists, and NGOs from Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and Guatemala participated in this exchange.
This campaign was conducted in collaboration with Burness Communications, the PRISMA Foundation, the Foundation for Conservation and Sustainable Development (FCDS), the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests, and the World Bank’s Amazon Sustainable Landscapes (ASL).
The following products and activities were developed:
Communication and advocacy strategy
Creation of narrative and key messages based on data and scientific evidence
Coordination of digital platforms of four organizations in Central America and South America
Media relations and engagement with journalists
Field visit with international journalists from outlets such as El Tiempo and El Espectador
Distribution strategy for internal and external audiences
Development of a participatory content creation strategy
